Golden Panthers Slow Start

When you think  college football in Florida the names that come to your head are The University of Miami, Florida State University, and University of Florida. As of late The University of Miami has been on a dry spell after having a decade of down years. The that has been making the most noise in Miami has been Florida International University. The Golden Panthers ended last season with an 8-5 (5-3) record and their second year in a row being invited to a bowl game. They came into this 2012 -2013 season with high expectations of winning another Sun Belt title and hopefully and a bowl. Unfortunately for FIU, things have not gone according to plan. The Golden Panther have gotten off to a very slow start with a 1-4(0-1) record thus far. One of the biggest reasons for the lack of success for this team is the fact that the defense has been playing sub par at best. The Golden Panthers are giving up and average of 38.6 points per game and 417.2 yards per game. Regardless of how  explosive your offense is, it is going to be a tough task to win many games letting opposing offenses exploit you the way FIU has. It also does not help FIU’s cause that they rank 7th in total offense in the Sun Belt. That just will not cut it with such a lackluster effort on defense.

Now despite the slow start by the Golden Panthers, there is still a chance for them to salvage their season and hopefully win the conference title and receive an invitation to a bowl game. They have seven games remaining on their schedule and all seven of them are conference games and four of them at home. With so many conference games left, FIU can turn it’s season around and still be in contention for a Sun Belt title. This will be no easy task, for this to be possible the defense is really going to have to step up and keep games close to give themselves chance for the offense to win them some games late. Look for quarterback Jake Medlock to step up big for this team and lead this offense with the help of the running back duo of Kedrick Rhodes and Darian Mallary. For FIU’s sake some of the more experienced players on defense need to come up with big plays and cause some turnovers which will help the Golden Panthers a chance.
